TABATA Kihachi the Third (1877-1956) was the first textile-dyeing craftsman
designated as a Living National Treasure. He and TAKEUCHI Seiho (1864-1942;
one of the representative Japanese painters based in Kyoto) learned painting from
KONO Bairei (1844-1895) and TABATA later took over his father’s textile
dyeing business. This book collects together sketches that TABATA made while
he was studying painting under KONO. He observed plants and flowers with
great attention and carefully depicted them in exact detail. These sketches will be
perfect models for those who are studying painting and design.
